Mint: An Herbal Ally for Summertime

As we settle into the heat of summer, I wanted to share more about one of my favorite herbal allies for this season - abundant MINT (mentha). With cooling, refreshing and soothing properties Mint is an ideal herb for Cancer season!

I’ve always loved the scent and taste of mint (peppermint, spearmint, chocolate mint…all the mints). When first growing mint, I attempted to cultivate varied species confined to pots within my garden, knowing how prolifically and abundantly this matting herb can grow. Yet Mint merely scoffed at my attempts , dying out in the pots and then popping up all over my garden on their own accord.

At first I removed the mint where I could, worried that they would outcompete the rest of my herbs in my garden box, something mint is quite capable of doing. But then one night in meditation, as I was breathing deeply and quieting my thoughts, I heard very clearly in my mind “drink more mint”. Trusting that inner guidance, I stopped resisting the mint in my yard, choosing only to clip it back from my other herbs when needed. This was one of those times that I learned to trust the generous and loving gifts Mother Earth provides.

I’ve been drinking and eating mint all the time since then! I make teas, smoothies and even salads with mint and use her energy to welcome in and enhance energies of abundance, protection and vitality. Read on to learn more about Mint.

MINT USES

There are so many ways to add mint to your diet and practice this summer! Here are some of my favorites:

  • Mint Tea (hot or iced): steep a few handful of washed mint leaves in hot water for ten minutes, let cool to desired temperature and sip away! You can also make a sun tea, and harness the powerful energy of the sun!

  • Mint & Watermelon: This is one of my favorite mint pairings, right up there with mint and chocolate! I love to add fresh mint leaves to chopped watermelon cubes. You can also blend fresh mint leaves with watermelon and ice-cubes for a refreshing summer smoothie!

  • Mint Smoothies: Add a couple of handfuls of fresh mint leaves to your morning smoothie! Trust me, it’s super delicious and energizing too.
